Week 41 (09 – 15/10)
Hi everybody! I hope you all had a good week, and better weather than what we had in Helsinki! Here we are again with my weekly summary.
Exceptionally, we had no lecture on Monday because a lot of our fellow students were at the LOB Stockholm Cruise. Thursday’s lectures were very interesting. We were lucky to have students from Leppävaara joining us at Otaniemi Campus for the final happiness video’s evaluation. We saw the best three videos selected through special criteria’s. Here is the video I made with my group. You are very lucky to watch the winning video of all the different groups! We were surprised but very happy! And we received as a gift a Laurea University of Applied Sciences’ pen ;)
Anna Nolvi gave us our first lecture about personal branding. To put it short, personal branding is the way to present yourself, and your own brand attributes. How unique are you compared to the others? Here is one quote that I liked: “We choose our own (life) road. If you know where to go, you will get there. Otherwise, if you don’t know, you will get anywhere.” We also had a short introduction about the Johari’s window.
We did two exercises about personal branding that I enjoyed. The next subject was about digital natives. Our teacher gave us some tips about our Facebook, and about making our own CV. On tip that I particularly remember is to finish every presentation with a slide about ourselves. Because people always remember the last slide. You can add a quote or a motto or any picture of yourself and a way to contact you. Our final task for this week is to make our own elevator pitch in a short video. An elevator pitch is a summary of yourself that includes who you are, what do you do for a living and your own qualifications. It is used to define you briefly as a person and to point out your value. Here is mine:
Our second lecture was given by Ilkka Kurkela. He is a Business Area Director at University of Helsinki HY+. He spoke mainly about his own experience and what he encountered as difficulties in his life. His three main tips were the following ones.
Seize opportunities
Be able to say sorry / accept apologies
Congratulate good work
I really enjoyed his presentation and the way he presented. I will remember what he said to us: “Always reflect on what happens to you.” He also asked us to reflect on the three persons that inspired us during our life. I was really inspired as a kid by the youth movement. Especially one person from it: my leader when I was 12 years old. I only had him during one year. I can’t remember his real name because I only knew him by his totem name. He inspired me for all the following years. When I became myself a scouts’ leader, I realized how he changed me in a positive way. I learned a lot from him and how to be an attentive leader as he was. The second person that had a lot of influence on me was my first singing teacher. It wasn’t the classic music school teacher as you might think. He was our conductor of choir. From my 11 till my 14 years old, I was in a boys’ choir. During those three years, I travelled a lot to France, Italy, Slovenia, Brazil, Argentina and more to perform a lot of concerts. That man made me trust myself, believe in my capacities and skills. He could see in everyone what they were capable of. I ended singing a solo in Dutch in a cathedral in front of more than 500 people thanks to him. My third source of inspiration comes from some of my best friends. Each of them has a different way to live his/her life. They have different personalities. Every one of them inspired me at one point in my life by saying something I gave importance to. Or they inspired me by achieving something impressive. Or by giving me the motivation I needed. Or by surprising me in a way I never thought about. It is impossible for me to choose one person between my best friends or one action they did, but I wanted to mention them. Friends are the best thing humans have in their life. Never underestimate how much well they can do to you.
Let’s go back to Ilkka Kurkela’s lecture. He mentioned two very important things in the marketing business world. People must always know those things about you:
“How to find you, and why to trust you?” This is something that I give a lot of importance to. He ended his presentation with a lot of LinkedIn tips that I already applied!
To conclude my post, I will inform you about the actual weather in Helsinki. Why am I doing this? For the simple reason that we are having an exceptionally bad weather, and I want to point out and inform you how bad it is :D. Helsinki City reached in the two first weeks of October more than 100 milliliters rain! This is the highest rainfall since 1960. We broke the rain record here in Helsinki. To show you some comparison, usually, it only rains about 50 to 60 milliliters in the WHOLE month of October ;)
Thanks for reading my blog and see you next week!
